Six Great Resources For Writers

Bookshelf of a Grammar Floozy

Writer Education

Writer education tops the 540 Club “Vision and Values” list (along with writer encouragement and writer community).

Education doesn’t happen by accident. We bring in industry leaders and experienced writers to share during the 540 Community Zoom meetings. Questions are welcome in the 540 Club FB group and via the 540 Club website.

But each of us is responsible for personal education.

And (shocker) reading BOOKS is a great way to educate ourselves.

Where to Find Books

We don’t have to spend a small fortune–or our grocery money–on books about writing.

Yes, it’s great to buy at full price so our writer-friends can feed their kid/dog/squirrel, but hey, we gotta eat, too.

Check thrift stores, yard sales, second-hand bookstores, etc., to score great resources at a fraction of the original cost. Find books at a discount on sites like Thriftbooks.com.

Don’t Miss These Resources

Several you should definitely grab:

  • The Chicago Manual of Style (make sure it’s the most recent version)
  • Merriam-Webster’s English Usage Dictionary
  • The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style (supplements CMOS for many Christian publishers)
  • Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (the audio version is spectacular)
  • The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. & E. B. White
  • The Christian Writer’s Market Guide by Steve Laube
